BERLIN (AP) — A German police union boss has criticized organizers of Berlin's annual open-air New Year's Eve party for designating a special "safety area" for women, saying it suggests they aren't safe from assault elsewhere.

The comments by Rainer Wendt, who heads the right-leaning DpolG union, come amid an ongoing debate in Germany about how to tackle an increase in sexual assaults.

A man dressed in uniform with a swastika, carrying a pistol, stunned citizens as well as police in the city known for holding the trials of Nazi war criminals.
Police reported on Sunday that a drunk man wearing a soldier's uniform with a swastika and carrying a pistol was seen walking through central Nuremberg in the morning, “shocking many witnesses as well as police officers”.

Officers were first alerted to the incident at 7.30am, with witnesses saying that “he appeared to have the [Nazi] mindset”.

A second report to police stated that he had moved to a tavern. But when officers arrived, the man had already gone on his way.

Finally, officers found him outside a club, but at first they could not find a swastika on him. After searching the 27-year-old however, they discovered a patch that seemed to go with the uniform, depicting a swastika under a Nazi eagle.

Police said they believe the man ripped off the patch before officers were able to find him. MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Peter Hirschmann has often recounted his own story of fleeing Germany as a teenager to escape Adolf Hitler's persecution of the Jews, then joining the U.S. Army to fight the Nazis.

But the 92-year-old started to cry as he read a three-page letter, neatly printed in blue fountain pen, which arrived out of the blue from Nuremberg and stirred very different thoughts of his past.

Its author, Doris Schott-Neuse, told him how her grandfather had acquired Hirschmann's family home under the Nazis, expressing her shame and imploring him for forgiveness.

Spurred to look into her family's past after helping a friend dealing with traumatic issues related to her own, the 46-year-old civil servant was shocked to find the family narrative she'd believed for years was a half-truth at best, and felt compelled to reach out to the elderly man in Maplewood, New Jersey, near New York City.

"I am deeply ashamed for what us Germans did to yourself, your family and to your friends and relatives and to the members of the Nuremberg Jewish community," she wrote. "It is hardly bearable to start thinking about the details — what a horror and nightmare it must have been to live through this."

Eric C. Conn, a flashy Kentucky lawyer who called himself "Mr. Social Security," was arrested for his alleged role in a $600 million federal disability fraud scheme, according to an indictment that was unsealed Tuesday.

Conn, David Daugherty, and Alfred Adkins, a clinical psychologist who performed medical evaluations for Conn seven years, were charged in an 18-count indictment on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Among the unheralded winners of 2017 are political scientists, some of whom could spend the rest of their careers trying to explain Donald Trump’s rise and significance. Two of them, Michael Barber and Jeremy C. Pope of Brigham Young University, saw in Trump’s ever-shifting, ideologically flexible views “a unique opportunity” to test a crucial question in American politics: “To which do people give a higher priority: their ideology or their partisan affiliation?” They ask, Why is it that Republicans, self-described defenders of American values and interests, “became four times more likely to view Vladimir Putin favorably” from 2014 to 2016? What changed is that the Republican Party nominated someone who boasted about the mutual admiration he shared with the Russian dictator, illustrating Barber and Pope’s finding that “group loyalty” and “social identity” are more important in shaping voters’ views than their professed ideology.

Another term for “social identity” is “tribalism,” a word that has appeared in more than 60 articles in the New York Times so far in 2017, almost all in relation to American politics or culture. A 17-year-old Virginia teen was charged with two counts of murder Saturday after he allegedly murdered his girlfriend’s parents.

Scott Fricker, 48, and his wife Buckley Kuhn-Fricker, 43, were shot and killed in their home in Reston, Virginia, on Friday according to Fairfax County police. The teenager, who is not named due to his minor status, shot the Frickers after getting into their home. Ankara (AFP) - Turkey on Sunday slammed the incoming Austrian government, a coalition between conservatives and the far-right, for "discrimination" and "racist approaches" after its programme pledged Vienna would not agree to Ankara joining the EU.

The landmark coalition deal, marking the return to power in Austria of the Freedom Party (FPOe), has sparked ripples of concern throughout Europe after a year of successes for far-right movements.

Germany's Central Council of Jews has repeatedly called for the government to appoint a commissioner to combat rising anti-Semitism in the country.

The council has suggested the new anti-Semitism officer could record attacks and serve as a point of contact for people who experience prejudice.

Jewish people in Germany are increasingly worried about their safety, a report conducted by an independent group of experts, published in April, found.

The internet and social media in particular are sources of anti-Semitic hate, according to the findings. At the time, experts called for better detection and prosecution of anti-Semitic offenses, as well as better counseling services and a new anti-Semitism officer.

Geneva (AFP) - The UN on Friday harshly criticised the mass-hanging of 38 men at a prison in southern Iraq this week, urging Baghdad to immediately halt all executions.

Iraq on Thursday hanged 38 jihadists belonging to the Islamic State group or Al-Qaeda for terrorism offences at a prison in the southern city of Nasiriyah, according to provincial authorities.
