Sofia (AFP) - Hundreds of far-right nationalists marched Saturday night through Sofia, capital of current EU president Bulgaria, lighting torches to honour a late pro-Nazi general.
Local authorities tried to ban the rally that has been held every year for over a decade, and which the government has slammed as "shameful".
But organisers obtained a court order allowing them to proceed.
Dozens of members of far-right groups from across Europe also took part.
"We object to being called anti-Semites, neo-Nazis, or fascists. We are simply nationalists," rally leader Zvezdomir Andronov told AFP.

WASHINGTON ― Jordon Dyrdahl-Roberts made headlines last Wednesday when he tweeted that he’d quit his government job rather than process paperwork that could lead to the arrest and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Now he’s broke and out of work. But his stand against President Donald Trump’s treatment of immigrant families has inspired hundreds of people to reach out and say thanks ― and to set up a GoFundMe page for him. In a matter of days, as of Tuesday, they had raised more than $11,000 to help Dyrdahl-Roberts regain financial footing.
“I am deeply humbled,” he told HuffPost, choking up. “I’ve got some breathing room now.”
Dyrdahl-Roberts, 33, hadn’t planned on quitting his job as a legal secretary at the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, where he’d worked for more than six years. Money is already tight at his home in Helena, where he’s raising a four-year-old with his wife, who works as a substitute librarian.
But when he was told last week to start processing subpoenas from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which, under Trump, has been cracking down on undocumented immigrants, he said he couldn’t live with himself if he had a role in breaking up families. He said the stories people have shared with him since he quit have erased any doubts he had about whether he made the right choice.
“I’ve had Dreamers reach out and say thank you,” said Dyrdahl-Roberts, referring to undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. “One person told me their grandmother was a Holocaust survivor and if someone hadn’t made a choice like mine, they wouldn’t have survived. WASHINGTON ― Jordon Dyrdahl-Roberts made headlines last Wednesday when he tweeted that he’d quit his government job rather than process paperwork that could lead to the arrest and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Now he’s broke and out of work. But his stand against President Donald Trump’s treatment of immigrant families has inspired hundreds of people to reach out and say thanks ― and to set up a GoFundMe page for him. In a matter of days, as of Tuesday, they had raised more than $11,000 to help Dyrdahl-Roberts regain financial footing.
“I am deeply humbled,” he told HuffPost, choking up. “I’ve got some breathing room now.”
Dyrdahl-Roberts, 33, hadn’t planned on quitting his job as a legal secretary at the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, where he’d worked for more than six years. Money is already tight at his home in Helena, where he’s raising a four-year-old with his wife, who works as a substitute librarian.
But when he was told last week to start processing subpoenas from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which, under Trump, has been cracking down on undocumented immigrants, he said he couldn’t live with himself if he had a role in breaking up families. He said the stories people have shared with him since he quit have erased any doubts he had about whether he made the right choice.
“I’ve had Dreamers reach out and say thank you,” said Dyrdahl-Roberts, referring to undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. “One person told me their grandmother was a Holocaust survivor and if someone hadn’t made a choice like mine, they wouldn’t have survived. The university, which is based in Kent but has regional campuses elsewhere in the state, said it had responded to attorney Kyle Bristow reaffirming its earlier response that no suitable space is available for Spencer to speak between April 30 and May 12.
Bristow had told Kent State it had until the end of business Friday to agree to rent space at an "acceptable date and time" or face a lawsuit. A well-known immigrant rights activist who was on the cusp of being deported this week has filed a lawsuit that allows him to stay in the U.S., for now.
Ravi Ragbir, executive director of the immigrant advocacy group New Sanctuary Coalition, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in January during a routine check-in with the agency. What’s more, ICE sent him to a detention center more than 1,000 miles away in Florida. Ragbir was released more than two weeks later after Manhattan federal Judge Katherine Forrest called ICE’s decision “unnecessarily cruel.”
Despite his release, Ragbir was still scheduled for deportation for Saturday, Feb. 10. A suit filed Wednesday by Ragbir and other pro-immigration groups in federal court accuses ICE of targeting activists. A Republican candidate for an Illinois seat in Congress on Thursday openly denied the Holocaust and said, “You jews media, you’ve gone absolutely nuts,” during an appearance on CNN’s “New Day.”
Arthur Jones, the self-described former leader of the American Nazi Party, called the Holocaust a “scam” and an “extortion racket” as “New Day” host Alisyn Camerota challenged him. Jones, the sole Republican in the race for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, is set to capture the party’s nomination in the March primary election. Camerota aired footage of an unhinged Jones speech at a neo-Nazi event, then posed a blunt question.
“Mr. Jones, It is shocking to hear how vocally and unapologetically racist you are. Are you a Nazi?”
Jones said he doesn’t call himself a Nazi because he has not formally been involved with Nazi organizations for the last “15, 20 years.”

Syria's state media say the U.S.-led coalition has bombed government-backed troops in eastern Syria, citing reports of dozens killed and wounded.
The official state news agency SANA reported on Thursday that the overnight attack hit tribal fighters in Khusham, a town in the oil-rich Deir el-Zour province.
SANA says the local fighters were battling IS militants and the U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the area. The U.S. military said late Wednesday it launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops after as many as 500 attackers began what appeared to be a coordinated assault on the SDF accompanied by U.S. advisers in Deir el-Zour province.
SANA called it an "aggression." The state Al-Ikhbariyah TV said there were reports that dozens were killed.
