Finland has banned the neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement following a court ruling on Thursday that found the group spreads hate and calls for acts of violence.
The extremist group, which has its roots in Sweden but is active across Nordic countries, seeks to establish a national socialist state. Its members have attacked LGBTQ events, clashed with anti-racist demonstrators and carried out bomb attacks on refugee centers.
“In addition to offending and hateful expressions ... the association urges its supporters to use violence and harassment against alleged enemies,” the Finnish court said, according to a Reuters translation of the verdict.
Finland’s national police announced they were seeking a ban on the Nordic Resistance Movement in December of last year, after one of the extremist group’s members attacked a 28-year-old Finnish man during a demonstration outside Helsinki’s central train station months before.
In the incident, Nordic Resistance Movement member Jesse Torniainen kicked a passerby who spat on the ground in front of the group’s rally in September 2016, causing the man to fall and hit his head on the pavement. The victim died six days after the incident, and Tornianen was found guilty of aggravated violence in December and sentenced to two years in jail.
Finland’s National Police Commissioner Seppo Kolehmainen called the Nordic Resistance Movement a “violent openly racist organization” following Torniainen’s conviction, and announced that authorities would file suit against the group.

Berlin (AFP) - Germany moved a step towards resolving its political crisis Friday when the Social Democrats (SPD) said they were ready to hold talks with caretaker Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a sign they might offer the veteran leader their key support.

Europe's economic powerhouse has been mired in uncertainty since Merkel's conservative bloc won a September 24 vote but without a clear majority, leaving it unclear whether it would be able to continue to rule.

"We won't be obstructionist for the sake of being obstructionist," said SPD leader Martin Schulz, dropping his earlier categorical rejection to a governing alliance with Merkel.

But he also cautioned that there was "no automatic path" to a solution -- which could take the form of a new coalition, or of cooperating as Merkel runs a minority government -- and that SPD rank-and-file members would have to approve any decision.

Julia Kloeckner, vice-president of Merkel's CDU party, welcomed "the good intentions" of Schulz's comments, stressing that her party has "always kept the door open".

Since the vote, Merkel has failed to find coalition partners to govern the EU's largest economy for her fourth term.

The centre-left SPD -- Merkel's former junior coalition allies -- vowed to go into opposition immediately after the election in which they scored a dismal result.

However, Merkel's talks with two other parties, the left-leaning Greens and pro-business FDP, collapsed early this week when the FDP unilaterally pulled out.

Merkel now faces few good options short of new elections: asking the SPD to enter a new "grand coalition", or running a minority government, possibly with the Greens, and asking the SPD to cooperate on an issue-by-issue basis.

- 'Credibility problem' -

Schulz had repeatedly rejected governing in Merkel's shadow, but has now faced mounting pressure within his party ranks to rethink his stance, and help stop Germany from sinking into months of paralysis.

"The SPD cannot behave like a child sulking in the corner," said SPD Justice Minister Heiko Maas after his party Thursday held an eight-hour meeting late into the night.

The man, who was not named, was 22 years old when he worked at the extermination camp Majdanek in occupied Poland between August 1943 and January 1944.

He was a member of the fifth company of the SS Death's Head unit, which was regularly deployed as guards and tasked with monitoring and maintaining order at the camp.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Prosecutors in Poland opened an investigation Monday to determine if statements expressed during a march by far-right nationalists in Warsaw this month violated laws against propagating racism.

The march held on Nov. 11, Poland's Independence Day, drew an estimated 60,000 participants. Many marchers carried Poland's national flags, while some had flags with Celtic crosses, a white supremacist symbol, or banners with slogans like "White Europe of brotherly nations."

Kellyanne Conway suggested Monday that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore’s potential to help pass the GOP’s tax bill outweighs the mounting child molestation accusations against him ― a stance that represents a major shift from comments she made last week on the matter.

“Whatever the facts end up being, the premise, of course, the principle, the incontrovertible principle, is that there is no Senate seat worth more than a child,” the White House counselor told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday in response to allegations that Moore sexually molested teen girls when he was in his 30s.

But on Monday, Conway seemed all but ready to throw Moore’s accusers under the bus in exchange for the candidate’s potential to help pass the GOP’s tax bill.

“So vote Roy Moore?” asked “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade after Conway bashed Doug Jones, Moore’s Democratic opponent in the race.

“I’m telling you that we want the votes in the Senate to get this tax bill through,” Conway responded.

A World War II veteran’s last breaths were among nurses who were secretly filmed laughing and failing to adequately perform CPR or call for help in a timely fashion, a disturbing video shows.

James Dempsey, 89, was residing at Northeast Atlanta Health and Rehabilitation Center in February 2014 when he repeatedly triggered his call button while gasping for help, video recently obtained by WXIA-TV shows.

Roughly eight minutes later, a nurse comes in, raises his bed, (they turned his oxygen off! CDH) turns off his call light and then leaves the room. Nearly an hour later, nurses called 911 but by that time it was too late.

Dempsey’s family sued the home the following year after reviewing the footage they had secretly recorded. The Federal Aviation Administration has found no violations with an infamous Arkansas event that involves dropping live turkeys from a plane ― but that may be because no one ever thought they’d need a rule about that.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A leading figure among religious liberals says the candidacy of Republican Roy Moore for U.S. Senate is a struggle for the "soul of the nation."

The remarks Saturday by the Rev. William J. Barber come a day after a letter signed by dozens of progressive pastors in Alabama said Moore — dogged by recent allegations of inappropriate conduct toward teenage girls decades ago — is unfit to serve.

Barber, former head of the North Carolina NAACP, spoke at an anti-Moore rally at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, that drew more than 100 people. The event was in direct contrast to a news conference Thursday during which religious conservatives expressed their commitment to Moore, who describes himself as a conservative Christian who hews to family values. Angela Merkel is continuing crisis talks to form a coalition to save her 12-year rule this morning after marathon discussions failed because of 'serious differences' between the sides.

The parties aimed to wrap up the talks last night but did not reach an agreement after haggling for 15 hours, with disagreements focused on migration numbers and the environment.

The Christian Democrats leader is trying to form an untested alliance with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) and the environmentalist Greens - with snap elections likely if no agreement can be reached.

Merkel, 63, was left badly weakened by the inconclusive election last month, which saw the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) lure millions of her voters, leading to fears another poll could help consolidate their support.

Talks between the 'Jamaica coalition', so called because each party's colours match the Caribbean island's flag, started at 11am today, seven hours after they drew to a close in the early hours.

A few dozen free speech advocates rallied peacefully Saturday on Boston Common but just like last summer’s event, they were outnumbered by counter-protesters.

The “Rally for the Republic” event was held by conservative groups Resist Marxism and Boston Free Speech despite being denied a permit by the city. Police surrounded the gathering.

BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government should revoke landing rights for Kuwait Airways given its ban on Israeli passengers, a senior Justice Department official said on Friday, saying such discrimination was intolerable.

Christian Lange, parliamentary state secretary in the ministry, appealed to Chancellor Angela Merkel to personally advocate a ban on Kuwait Airways' operations in Germany.

A German court ruled on Thursday that the airline had the right to refuse to carry an Israeli passenger due to his nationality, a verdict that Jewish groups said condoned anti-Semitism.

Lange told Merkel in the letter that he had received countless phone calls from members of the Jewish community and from others in Israel, expressing shock about the court ruling, made just days after Germany solemnly marked the anniversary of the Nov. 9, 1938 Nazi pogroms against the Jews.

"We cannot say 'Never again' at a remembrance ceremony, but then remain silent when activists in Germany call for a boycott of Israel, or, as in this case, when an airline refuses to carry Israeli citizens," Lange said.
