“I’m so sorry that I wasn’t there that day to protect you,” Stacey Hilton tearfully told the court, speaking directly to her daughter, McKenna.
Mckenna was 18 when she was strangled by her half-brother, Savon Schmus, on Aug. 18, 2016.
Schmus, who was then 16, admitted to the killing as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Only a small fraction of the thousands of Colorado voters who withdrew their registrations following a controversial request for voter information from President Donald Trump’s voter fraud probe have chosen to reregister less than two weeks ahead of election day.
8,983 people have canceled their voter registrations since June 28, when Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), the vice chair of Trump’s commission to investigate voter fraud, sent a controversial letter to election officials in all 50 states requesting voter information, according to the Colorado secretary of state’s office. While some voters said they intended to register again ahead of election day, just 1,622 have done so. It’s impossible to say why all of those voters deregistered, but election officials said there was a noticeable surge after Kobach’s letter. Personne n'a revendiqué l'agression, qui était la dernière d'une série d'incendies criminels contre des véhicules de la police et de la police.

NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC says journalist Mark Halperin has been suspended from his role as network contributor following charges from five women who claimed he sexually harassed them while he was an ABC News executive.
The network said Thursday it found Halperin's conduct as described in a CNN story "very troubling" and that the veteran political reporter will be off the air until questions about his past are fully understood. NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC says journalist Mark Halperin has been suspended from his role as network contributor following charges from five women who claimed he sexually harassed them while he was an ABC News executive.
The network said Thursday it found Halperin's conduct as described in a CNN story "very troubling" and that the veteran political reporter will be off the air until questions about his past are fully understood. PRAGUE (AP) — Billionaire businessman Andrej Babis was already the second-richest person in the Czech Republic — and now he's set to become the country's most powerful politician, despite fraud charges against him.
Some call Babis the "Czech Berlusconi," a reference to Italy's former billionaire premier Silvio Berlusconi. Others consider him a local version of U.S. President Donald Trump. He is known for his slogan "everybody steals" and his resolve to run the state like a company.
His populist ANO party scored a landslide victory in the Czech Republic's parliamentary election Saturday — part of the anti-establishment wave that's sweeping through Western democracies.
